1. Bicycling days: experience the banks of the Rhine car-free

The cycling club ADFC invites you to the finale of the traffic test from 22 to 24 August for a colourful event around cycling on the banks of the Rhine in Biebrich

Wiesbaden, 12.08.2025. The ‘1. Biebrich Cycle Days’ invite you to the car-free banks of the Rhine in Biebrich with a varied programme from Friday 22.8 to Sunday 24.8. The Rheingaustraße between Am Parkfeld and Wilhelm-Kopp-Straße, which is closed to car traffic, once again offers plenty of room to try out and ‘experience’. In addition, the area around the customs warehouse is transformed into a colourful ‘bicycle mile’.

The idea of ‘1. Bicycling days’

"We would like to celebrate the bicycle road on the banks of the Rhine with an attractive supporting programme for the finale on 23 and 24 August", says Sebastian Sellinat, who has taken over the project management as a dedicated biker for the ADFC. “In addition to the “Rheinufertage”, we have put a lot on our feet in the short term and hope that we can attract a lot of curious and bike-loving people to the car-free Rhine bank,” says Sellinat.

Friday - Music at the customs warehouse and Night Ride to Eltville

From 6 p.m., the final blocking for car traffic begins. The beer garden at the Zollspeicher is then called ‘Bühne Frei’ with a colourful music programme organised by the Biebrich Mitte district management. From 8:30 p.m., a joint bike tour to Eltville-Erbach to the Cycle Short Film Festival (starting at 9:30 p.m.) will start as part of the ‘Eroica Germania’.

Saturday – Trying out, repairing, donating, filming

The 23rd of August is dedicated to information, service and experience. The official opening of ‘1. Biebricher Fahrradtage’ will take over Dr. Hendrik Schmehl, Wiesbaden's Department of Finance, School and Culture, at 12 noon. Visitors can then expect a varied programme on the "bicycle mile" around the customs warehouse, including:

  • Presentations of local bicycle dealers
  • Riding a rickshaw
  • Test ride on the ‘Lilja’ cargo bike and two tandems
  • Open bicycle workshop and bicycle repair workshop
  • Information stands of smart city, environmental shop and many more
  • Games and hands-on activities for young and old

At a bicycle market, used bicycles can be purchased for a small price. "We want everyone to be able to afford their own bike and are happy about people who want to give well-preserved bicycles meaningfully into new hands," explains Sebastian Sellinat. ‘If you would like to donate a bicycle, you are welcome to drop it off at the ADFC information desk on Friday evening or Saturday.’

From 8:30 p.m. ADFC and the Oraniergemeinde invite you to the Oranierkirche, to the "1. Biebricher Fahrradkino’. The special thing about it is that the electricity for the film screening is generated by the spectators themselves using a bicycle generator. On site there is technical support for all those who want to participate with their own bike.

Sunday - Bicycle service and bridges to Mainz

The closing day, 24 August, is all about connecting moments: The day starts at the customs warehouse at 10 a.m. with a bicycle service with bicycle blessing. Throughout the day you can experience space and peace in front of the Biebrich Castle on the bicycle road or while strolling on the Rhine promenade.
In the afternoon, the bike demo for bridging to Mainz starts at the end – for all cyclists from young to old: at 2:30 p.m., the bike ride starts together on the banks of the Rhine in Biebrich and then the police escort travels just under 7 km over the Theodor-Heuss-Brücke to the ‘Stadtgefühle-Festival’ on the banks of the Rhine in Mainz. Those who have explored the festival can then go back to Wiesbaden on their own.

"We are already very excited and look forward to many meetings and exchanges on mobility, climate protection and transport justice", said the ADFC. The ADFC would like to thank all exhibitors and contributors – in particular the Biebrich-Mitte district management and the Biebrich citizens’ budget for the financial support.

The complete program and up-to-date information about the 1. Bicycling days can be found on the ADFC Wiesbaden website.

In addition to cycling, you can also take bus lines 4 and 14 directly to the Biebrich Rheinufer stop.

Traffic test in Biebrich

A traffic test is a temporary measure in the road space where a new traffic management or regime is tested to examine and assess its impact before a permanent decision is taken.
The car-free Rhine bank with the temporary installation of a bicycle road on the four weekends in August was intended to provide insights into whether blocking motorised traffic and the associated reduction of noise and air pollution could significantly improve the quality of stay and quality of life on the Rhine. The additional movement space for walking and cycling on the Rheingaustraße should relax the traffic situation on the Rhine promenade in front of the Biebricher Schloss. At the same time, the question was whether the necessary diversions would lead to excessive burdens elsewhere.
Further information on the traffic test can be found at: https://www.wiesbaden.de/leben-in-wiesbaden/mobilitaet/verkehrsentwicklung/verkehrsversuch-rheinufer-biebrich
