The ADFC asks: How cyclist-friendly is Wiesbaden?

The big ADFC bike climate test 2026 starts today. New: Children and adolescents with their own survey

Wiesbaden, 01.09.2026: Today, the big ADFC cycling climate test (FKT) starts in 2026. From 1 September to 30 November, cyclists all over Germany will be able to assess how bicycle-friendly it is right here in Wiesbaden. What is the condition of the cycle paths? How much is already being done for cycling? Is cycling fun or is it more stressful? For the first time, the focus is on children and adolescents with their own survey. The nationwide ranking of the most bicycle-friendly cities and further results of the survey will be presented in the spring of 2027.

ADFC Federal Chairman Frank Masurat says: “Cycling keeps you fit, is cost-effective and good for the climate – it's also fun. Many cities and municipalities are therefore building cycle paths and bicycle parking garages. But the conditions vary considerably from place to place. This is what the 12th survey is all about. ADFC cycling climate test. How has the bicycle-friendliness developed on site and where still needs to be improved? The results of the survey will help improve conditions for cyclists.”

Michéle Fleckenstein, Member of the Board of ADFC Wiesbaden/Rheingau-Taunus, says: ‘Anyone who regularly cycles in Wiesbaden knows the new bicycle roads Mosbacher Straße, Lessingstraße or brandnew in Rüdesheimer Straße, but also where the situation is confusing, such as directly at the main station or through the many construction sites. We want to make these experiences visible with the ADFC bicycle climate test. The results show us and the political leaders where Wiesbaden really stands when it comes to cycling. in which areas action is still needed. That is why we call on all cyclists to participate.”

Focus on children and adolescents

For the first time, the ADFC is also dedicating its own survey to children and adolescents as part of the ADFC bicycle climate test. Young people in particular need particularly safe conditions to be able to cycle independently – to school, sport or leisure time. Therefore, the ADFC wants to know from them what works well when cycling, what makes them difficult and what needs to change so that they like to get on the bike or even at all.

“The offer for safe and experienced cyclists has greatly improved in Wiesbaden in recent years and many companies have their own mobility programmes. Children and adolescents rarely get on the bike in Wiesbaden, because safe connections, which can also be managed alone, as well as safe parking facilities are still too often missing. Children and young people experience road traffic differently than adults. Their answers can show very concretely whether young people in Wiesbaden like to cycle and what needs to change in order to be able to travel safely and independently", says Fleckenstein.

In order to draw attention to the needs of children and adolescents, the ADFC Wiesbaden organizes a Kidical Mass (Kinder-Bicycle-Korso) on 20 September.

How safe does cycling feel? Are the bike paths wide enough and in good condition? How often is the bicycle used? The online survey on the ADFC cycling climate test consists of 27 questions, takes around ten minutes and runs until 30 November 2026. The survey is taking place for the twelfth time and shows how cyclists experience their place in a cyclist-friendly way and where there is room for improvement. The ADFC Wiesbaden therefore calls for the ADFC cycling climate test to be recommended also among friends and acquaintances, in clubs and at the workplace.

Municipalities are also in demand

The ADFC Cycle Climate Test 2026 includes three surveys: Cyclists assess the bike-friendliness of their place, children and young people describe their experiences and needs in the FKT youth – and at the FKT municipality, cities and municipalities provide information on how they already promote cycling. This makes the bike-friendliness on site visible from three different perspectives. The results will be presented in the spring of 2027, including the nationwide ranking of the most bicycle-friendly cities.
