Bicycle transport in the SEV of RB 10: ADFC praises VIAS and DB – improvements needed in parking facilities

Wiesbaden, 19.07.2026: The Allgemeine Deutsche Fahrrad-Club (ADFC) Wiesbaden/Rheingau-Taunus expressly welcomes the fact that 10 bicycles can be taken on the Rheingau line RB in rail replacement traffic (SEV). Many cyclists had feared in the run-up to the general refurbishment from 10 July 2026 that they would be rejected, as is often the case with SEV offers. However, a sample of the ADFC shows: The transport works, is uncomplicated and is supported by the bus companies used.

"The acceptance of bicycles in the SEV is an important signal for sustainable mobility in the Rheingau region", explains Elke Tegeler, Member of the Board of ADFC Wiesbaden/Rheingau-Taunus. “Especially here, where cycling and wine tourism play a major role, the combination of train and bicycle is essential. It is therefore all the more gratifying that VIAS and Deutsche Bahn have created this possibility.’

The ADFC had already pointed out the needs of cyclists at an early stage during the months-long closure and demanded a take-away option. The fact that this has now been implemented shows: SEV can be designed to be bicycle-friendly. In many regions, cyclists report experiences to the contrary – denied boarding or unsuitable vehicles. The current solution in the Rheingau proves that it is also customer-friendly.

The VIAS website states that it is not recommended to take a bicycle from Monday to Friday between 6:00 am and 8:00 pm and between 6:00 am and 11:00 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. This information is understandable, as the buses are busy at these times. However, the remaining time window for taking a car is very small and does not meet the mobility needs of many cyclists, especially commuters.

The ADFC also sees a need for action with regard to the parking possibilities at newly established SEV stops. There is a lack of secure bicycle parking facilities at several locations, such as the ‘Burg Crass’ stop in Eltville. Especially when transport options can be limited, cyclists must be able to park their bikes safely. ADFC and police point out that stable storage bars are necessary to be able to connect bicycles with frame, front and rear wheel. "Connect, not just lock" remains the central principle of theft prevention.

How the situation develops after the summer holidays, when more commuters and students are on the way, remains to be seen. The ADFC will closely monitor the situation and stands ready to discuss further improvements together with VIAS and DB.

"We are pleased with this positive signal and hope that bicycle transport in the SEV will become a matter of course everywhere in the future," continued Tegeler.
